What materials do you need for macrame?

The nice thing of macrame is that you don’t need much to get started. The most important thing is probably the cord, which is available in different thicknesses. If you don’t have the right thickness at home for the instructions, you can still try your hand at it. You will just have to adjust the lengths of cord a little, otherwise you will have too little or too much cord.

If your cord is thicker than in the instructions, you will need more cord. If it is thinner, you will need less. You can calculate exactly how much more or less you need with our cord length calculator, for example. Or you can estimate how much cord you need more or less, but I would only do this for smaller projects. You can then quickly knot them again and chalk it up to a learning effect. For large projects, it’s better to make the effort and buy the right thickness of cord – it would be more than annoying if you didn’t have enough at the end of a one metre wall hanging.

I would always keep the leftover cord as it is very easy to use for feathers.

Otherwise, you will need scissors and a ruler and, depending on the project, perhaps small or large branches from the forest, small metal rings for key rings or projects like the yoga mat strap and maybe wooden beads for decoration.

We will gradually upload more free macrame tutorials here, so it’s always worth checking back. Feel free to leave us comments on how you got on with the project and if you have a wish for the next project, don’t hesitate to write to us using the contact form.
